To my knowledge most Chajul huipils I find are daily use
huipils. The one distinct style is the Matrimonial Huipil that
some women tell me is also used by the confradia.

Notes on Thread and
Condition
THREAD --- I believe most of the chajul huipils
I buy are what Mayan women call "Alemen". It is a softer fine thread
that has also been preferred in Patzun.
While the Mayan women consistently tell me the "Alemen" is a fine
cotton thread, I am confused. Marilyn Anderson (1978) said that
"Aleman" was a brand of red rayon thread that was imported from Germany and
appeared to be no longer available.
I prefer to buy the "Aleman" huipils to the newer huipils that often have
synthetic threads, probably acrylic, for their base material.
Its harder to figure out what the thread used in
the brocade may be. Depending on the Huipil it may be cotton, a
synthetic thread or some combination of both. Increasing there is a
bit of what the weavers call "brillante", a type thread with of
metalic/plastic strand twined with cotton in the thread used to give a a
little special shine or brilliance to the design of the brocade.
Usually only a few of the embroidery threads in the huipil are of this type.
If the huipil includes "brillante" I have tried to indicate which colors
have this type of thread.
CONDITION - Condition is somewhat a
personal consideration. I try to describe condition as best I
can to help you evaluate the huipil. I encourage you to click on
the small pictures to get a better view. Unless noted all the huipils
I buy are handmade on a back-strap loom and "used", thus artistic, unique
and "not quite perfect". If you are a perfectionist relative to
condition probably look at ones in excellent or very good condition or "new"
or "like new". If you are like me and just like beautiful
huipils at reasonable value - good to moderately/reasonably good will
probably work for you. Lower cost huipils are likely to be fair to
poor condition. "Fairly good" are in-between.
I usually write my condition notes first, based on the descriptive terms
that naturally come to mind. This is my attempt to clarify
what I probably meant when I wrote these terms. I usually take into
account age of the huipil and whether it was a child's huipil when
describing condition. For example a huipil woven 25 years ago or a
3-year old child's huipil might be expected to have more wear than a woman's
huipil that is only 5 years old.
Excellent --- Very little
wear. Used huipil in exceptional condition, Probably not
worn many times or a cherished piece that someone took very good
care of.
Very Good --- Light wear, no
significant flaws.
Good --- Might have light
wear, maybe a few loose threads or light fading or very minor
spotting. ---- but nothing that bothers me.
Generally Good --- would be
good except for noted condition(s).
Moderately or Reasonably Good
--- Maybe some wear, loose threads, light fading or a spot or two..
Salvages may have some looseness. This huipil was probably used on a
daily basis and shows wear, but was reasonably well taken care of.
Fairly Good --- Some flaws and
wear.
Fair --- Conditional
problems as noted or considerable wear.
Poor --- Major conditional
problems or significant wear.
I generally use terms like "fine", "nice",
to describe the quality of the original work or design rather than the
current condition of the huipil.
Fitting
Tips --- Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces
and are not intended to be a fitted garment. The width of the garment should be
considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.
Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder
then remove them as a child grows.
Neck and head hole openings
on Huipils are often small. Note that we can not
guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.
If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and
lightly stitch it. This is especially true of
Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap
loom. Please check your neck and head measurements
carefully!!!
