Santiago Atitlan -- Interesting mix of
traditional designs and neck with embroidered roses border on this girls
huipil. Two panel huipil hand-woven on back-strap loom Sides
open so can be used as poncho or easily tacked closed. Older style
that does show some wear on velvet neck, but in otherwise good condition.

Santiago Atitlan - Many fine birds hand-embroidered on this huipil.
I counted more than 50 on one side.. The base material is a very light blue
with very dark purple (appear black) vertical stripes and similar colored
raised horizontal stripes. Ends of the panels have short
fringe. Sides of huipil are open (could easily be sewed closed)
Condition: Moderately good used condition.
The base material is fairly worn with some fading and graying with wear
along the selvage edges. . I would guess this huipil was
washed on stones in the lake like so many older huipils from Santiago
Atitlan. The embroidery is in relatively good condition.
2013: Bought from Dolores. Was huipil

Santiago Atitlan - An unusual huipil in design and embroidery
technique. The grapes around the neck and small raised rose flowers
are a design and technique I don't see often in Santiago Atitlan. I
like that the traditional Mayan calendar designs are larger and well done
and distinct. Two panels selvage finished the others with short fringe.
The huipils sides are open. Color is very light blue with narrow dark
purple/black (?) vertical stripes. The horizontal stripes raised weave
in two tones of purple with a bit of" brillante" (metallic) thread.
Condition: .A well used huipil in fairly good
condition. The base material is worn and what one might called "grayed" -
but evenly so. I would guess this huipil was washed on stones in the
lake like so many huipils from Santiago Atitlan. There is a bit
of looseness and a few loose threads with the embroidery around the neck. I
would probably leave as it, but a couple reinforcing stitches would help if
you plan to wear it.
2013: Bought from Dolores. Was huipil
of her her sister-in-law, Luisa Cajon Pabla.

Santiago Atitlan - Light blue cotton base material with dark navy
stripes woven into the fabric. The birds are nicely done with a bit of
metallic thread in the yellow embroidery floss. The panel ends have a
1/4 inch fringe that has been reinforced. Nicely finished shoulder.
With of the the material is about 29 or 30" across the shoulders, but has
fitted with it side seams to be about 22" wide
Condition: In fairly good condition. The
embroidery has a few loose threads, but has generally held up well.
The base material shows some sun fading and light spotting. There is one
small hole (less than dime sized) where the fabric as worn and could be
darned closed.
2013: Purchased from Ana Maria. Probably made by her or her mother.

Santiago Atitlan - Hand embroidered hummingbirds (colobri) and
others in this huipil. The base material is light (sky) blue with
purple vertical stripes. The base material was woven on a back-strap
loom. Two ends of the panels are selvage finished, the other two are
fringed (easily hemmed). Sides of huipil are seamed so the wider portion
around the shoulders has the appearance of short sleeves. Neck is
nicely finished with a closed buttonhole type stitch.
Condition: Fair to moderately good used
condition. The base material is fairly worn with some fading and light
spotting. There is wear and some stress points at the bottom of the arm
hole. The embroidery is in relatively good condition and has a little bit of
brillante (metal threads). An interesting addition is some pink/rose
embroidery near the bottom edge of the huipil in one panel. Ana Maria
was teaching her young daughter to embroider. I have left it, but
could be removed without much trouble.
2016: Bought from Ana Maria. She
embroidered and wore.

Santiago Atitlan - A combination of machine and hand embroidered birds
in this huipil. The birds directly below neck-line are machine embroidered.
The design was embellished with 3 set of birds on each side and a set of
birds over the shoulder. The base material is light (sky) blue with black vertical stripes.
The base material was woven on a back-strap loom. Ends of the panels
are seamed. Sides of huipil are seamed so the wider portion around the
shoulders has the appearance of short sleeves.

across the shoulders. The base material is cotton and light blue.

Santiago Atitlan - Incredible work went into the embroidered
flowers on this huipil The base material is cotton. It's color is
light blue-lavender with black stripes. The embroidered flowers have multiple
colors in each flower giving them the feel of a "painted picture".
Some brillante (metallic) thread border parts of the flowers giving them
extra depth and a bit of sparkle. The panel ends have a 1/4 inch fringe.
The side seams are wide creating a more fitted appearance. The fabric
is 29" wide, but is with side seams only 22" in functional width (could
probably be opened)
Condition: Good used huipil. The embroidery is in good condition.
The base material shows some sun fading and light spotting. The panels
are loosely sewn - can be easily sewn together or split apart.

Santiago Atitlan - Light lavender cotton base material with black
and darker lavender (mauve?) stripes woven into the fabric. The top
portion of the huipil has interesting cross stripe design of lavender and
black "dots" with a speck of metallic gold in the center. The flowers
are hand embroidered with some metallic thread. Ends of panels are hemmed on
one side - other side I'm not sure whether nicely cut or loose selvage (I
would suggest hemming).
Condition: In fairly good condition. The
main problem is the metallic gold thread is worn in places and thus there a
some loose threads.

Santiago Atitlan - Santiago Atitlan hand woven huipil with
beautiful bird embroidery (look at close-up) on front and back and along
shoulders. Base material cotton. Color is a light blue-lavender with black
stripes. Embroider includes a little bit of the "brillante" metal
threads in the brown embroidery floss that gives a little extra sparkle to
the over-all effect.
Ends of 4 panels have a 1/3 inch fringe rather tha n a selvage finish (you
could be hem if prefer). Panel sides open, could be worn as a poncho
over a shell or turtleneck or easily hemmed closed. Fits over my 22"
head. I think would be an attractive huipil to wear.
Condition: Good used condition, base material
has light even fading and wear. The huipil side seams were sewn about
two inches from the fabric edge (to make the huipil fit the a smaller women
better). They are now open. Embroidery in very good condition with
just a few loose threads.

Santiago Atitlan - Light blue-lavender base with darker purple
vertical stripes woven into fabric. The horizontal stripe design is
probably hard to see unless you enlarge the pictures (click on them) -- with
a multicolored jewel like feeling of small flower and X's in the weave.
There is "brillante" thread in many of these colors which adds to the
effect. The base was woven on a backstrap loom with two panels loosely
selvage finished and the other two hemmed. The embroidery of birds and
flowers is attractive, but done by machine rather than hand embroidered. The
neck is not quite large enough to fit over my 22" head. The neck
head-hole is nicely finished and would be a shame (and somewhat difficult)
to cut.

Santiago Atitlan - A weaver with
very
good skills and lots of
patience wove this 2-panel huipil. Note the fine
bird and other Mayan glyph figures found in 12 rows on each side of the
huipil in two shades of lavender. Each row has at least 40 figures.
Each figure is distinct and well done. Nice contrasting hand
embroidered flowers around the neck. The base material is white with
thin very dark purple/black (?) stripes The horizontal stripes are a
multicolored narrow stripes of dark green, purple and light aqua blue.
The same light aqua blue is somehow woven into the white base of the upper
portion of the huipil so that upon close examination, it has a tinge of very
light aqua blue rather than pure white. Side have been opened, but could be
easily sewn closed.
Condition: .Reasonably good used huipil.
Its been worn many times and probably washed on the rocks in Lake Atitlan.
Wear is fairly even. Major flaw is the bottom of the panels which have
been unevenly cut and are frayed. They could be easily hemmed.
Some tucks in the huipil (to make smaller) have been opened.

Santiago Atitlan -
Dual Colored red
2-panel foot-loomed jaspe (ikat) tube skirt (corte). One side of
the tube skirt is a wine red and the other is a rust red. Probably
used by someone who had two different colored huipils and would fold the
skirt so it worked with either one. Primary material is cotton. Dimensions of the skirt's fabric is
36" by
142".
Purchased in 2014 from Ana Maria. In generally good used condition.
May have some light even fading with use and loose threads. |

Fitting
Tips --- Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces
and are not intended to be a fitted garment. The width of the garment should be
considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.
Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder
then remove them as a child grows.
Neck and head hole openings
on Huipils are often small. Note that we can not
guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.
If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and
lightly stitch it. This is especially true of
Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap
loom. Please check your neck and head measurements
carefully!!!
