Guatemala Indigo
Mayan Morgas and Textiles
These skirts are called morgas and are
made of the dark blue indigo colored material that were worn in many Mayan
villages in the past. Some villages preferred a heavy or moderately heavy
morga material that are found on this page, often with village specific white or
light blue stripes. Many have colorful embroidered randa's that connect
the pieces of the skirt together. Mayan villages that continue to wear
these styles include Santiago Sacatapequez, Santa Maria de Jesus,
Santa Apolonia,
Altenango, Chuarancho and Palim. The skirts are in demand because many talented
sewers transform the durable fabric into bags, vests, pillows and many other
beautiful items. Once made with indigo natural dyes, today most of the skirt
material is made with commercial dyes.
Other Villages such as Nahuala and San Antonio Palopo also use
beautiful indigo colored material that tends to be a bit lighter weight
for their skirts. They usually have colorful randas.

This two-panel skirt is a large beautiful piece of indigo
colored cotton fabric with medium blue lines. The moderately heavy cotton fabric was made on a treadle loom. The colorful randa
embroidery is well done. Its in good condition with light even
wear and fading. I bought it from Evalia (SAC) in 2009, but did
not get it to the web until 2014. She said it was from Santiago
Sacatapequez. |
