combinations from San Juan Sacatepequez are striking - usually with
contrasting bold stripes of
mauve, red, yellow-gold and a rich brown, The huipil often has designs of
feathered serpents and double-headed eagles brocaded into its brocaded
fabric. The Huipils we have for
sale are pictured below, generally going from smaller sizes to larger
sizes. Unless otherwise indicated they are used, everyday
huipiles and textiles. |

--- Made of tightly woven cotton this huipil has the stripes typical of San Juan
Sacatepequez with a feathered serpent brocaded pattern. The condition
is generally good. The colors are a bit more mellow because of
even sun fading. There is some wear along the edge where the two panels have
been sewn together. The square neck is edged with a very worn black
velvet ribbon. The ends of the panels have two very tight nice
selvages and two that have been hemmed. Sides seams are open so can be used
as a poncho or easily seamed together.

Typical striped skirt (corte) material from San Juan Sacatepequez.
The material is seamed together with a colorful randa to form a tube
skirt. I bought it in the women's market - it is used fabric, but in
generally good condition. The cloth was made on a treadle loom. The randa
was well done, but does show a bit of wear in a couple places. One edge has
a good salvage. The other is a bit less finished, it may have been
evenly cut.

Unusual reversible tube skirt with two distinct colorful machine woven
randas. This is a two-panel skirt made from the typical black
and white foot-loomed cloth of San Juan Sacatepequez. I bought it in
the women's market - it is used fabric, but in excellent condition.
I have provided a number of pictures because I don't think I could
explain how the skirt is reversible in words.
.
Because of the randa design I suspect this skirt may be from a
neighboring pueblo. Woman of many Sacatepequez pueblos often choose to wear
this skirt material.

San Maria de Jesus skirt for Girl or Small Woman
-- Typical foot-loomed black and white
skirt material from San Juan Sacatepequez. The It is a 2-panel skirt
with one panel of 21" and the other 10". The colorful
flowered randas appear to be primarily decorative since the fabric is
sewn together elsewhere. The randas are embroidered using a machine. The woman I bought
the skirt from indicated that it was from Santa Maria de
Jesus, a neighboring pueblo to San Juan Sacatepequez. The skirt is used, in
very good condition.

Fitting
Tips --- Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces
and are not intended to be a fitted garment. The width of the garment should be
considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.
Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder
then remove them as a child grows.
Neck and head hole openings
on Huipils are often small. Note that we can not
guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.
If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and
lightly stitch it. This is especially true of
Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap
loom. Please check your neck and head measurements
carefully!!!
